As humans we can be so very limited. Most see only what is in front of them and perception extends to only what immediately concerns the individual. Our dependence on technology limits us even further cutting off our connection to what is natural and real. We get so involved with our tweeting and texting, facing and spacing that even the air we breathe becomes foreign.

Humans think they rule the world but they certainly do not rule the earth. How can you command something you have lost touch with?

Other species have been saved from all this. Without thumbs and access to computers they stay connected and aware of their surroundings. Their senses remain clear, sharp, strong and multifaceted.

My communication with animals has been mostly verbal as I hear their thoughts; occasionally they have let me feel their physical pain, discomfort or bliss but only briefly. Lately I've had the urge to slide even further "down the rabbit hole" as frightening and uncertain as that journey can be.

My first massage client of the day was a dog with cancer that lived across the bridge in NJ. After our session I stopped home, had lunch, washed dishes and headed out to do some animal communication with a newly adopted male rescue dog named Shadow. After the introductions were made I heard him say, "She's been touching a dog with the bad thing." I was a little surprised by that, although my animal clients never stop amazing me. I agreed with him and continued our session without incident.

Later that night I was sitting on the couch with Bella thinking how she must have known about Boomie's cancer long before I found it. Shadow smelled the NJ dog on me even after I had washed my hands and washed the dishes. I wondered how it smelled to Bella. I heard her say "angry mushrooms in the sun."
"So you are telling me cancer smells like angry mushrooms in the sun?" I asked.
"Yes."
"When did you start to smell it in Boomie?"
She showed me our backyard in the summer with the grass thick and green and flies buzzing around. Then I saw her with the yellow Frisbee hanging out of her mouth. (The lump, when I found it in November, was very small and the Frisbee was lost the winter before that November.) So according to Bella, Boomie developed bone cancer 16-17 months before he was diagnosed, way before any medical tests could pick it up.

This amazed me. When I pressed her further she tried to explain the best she could with my limited perception of things. Their sense of smell is extraordinary and multi leveled. Not only do they smell a blade of grass, they smell the chemicals inside it, the history of the soil it grew in and the scents of all those who passed it.

So as far as animals and people go, we exude the scents of all the chemicals that make up our biology and our emotions. Each emotion we have changes that chemical make up so depression, sadness, fear, happiness, joyfulness etc. is picked up easily by a dog instantaneously. They know we are sad before we realize we are feeling sad and they know we are sick before we even feel sick.

Again I am in awe of the beautiful German Shepherd that shares my life and of course all dogs for that matter. Now I just laugh to myself when I hear someone say, "Oh, it's just a dog." Yeah, if they only knew…
